In short: At WEB.CR a website costs ₡384,500 + VAT (₡434,485 in total) for a brochure site of up to 5 pages, and ₡659,500 + VAT (₡745,235 in total) for an editable site of up to 8 pages that you update yourself. You start with a 50% deposit and pay the balance before launch. On top of that you pay for the domain (US$70 + VAT a year for a .cr, US$20 + VAT for a .com) and, if you want it, maintenance from ₡25,000 a month + VAT.

"How much does a website cost?" is the question almost all our conversations start with. Online you'll find every kind of answer, from "free" to figures that scare people off, and almost none of them say what the price includes.

In this article we show you WEB.CR's real prices, the same ones our calculator uses, with complete examples, what you can add, what you pay every year and how to compare quotes from different providers.

How much does a website cost in Costa Rica?

A business website at WEB.CR costs between ₡384,500 and ₡659,500 plus VAT, depending on who will make the changes:

Plan What it is Before VAT Total with VAT Deposit (50%)
Brochure site Up to 5 pages. We make the changes. ₡384,500 ₡434,485 ₡217,243
Editable site Up to 8 pages you update yourself. ₡659,500 ₡745,235 ₡372,618

Both include a design of your own for your brand, built for mobile, a WhatsApp button and a contact form, and the basic setup so Google can find your site. If you need more pages, each additional page costs ₡35,000.

If you want to sell online, the price is different: we explain it in how much an online store costs in Costa Rica.

Brochure site or editable site?

The difference between the two plans is who changes the content after launch:

Two laptops with the same website: on one the provider makes the changes, on the other the owner edits the text from a dashboard
  • Brochure site: ideal if your site is a business card that rarely changes (services, about, contact). When you need a change, you message us and we make it.
  • Editable site: ideal if you'll publish often, such as promotions, news, new services or a blog. You log into a dashboard and change text and photos without depending on anyone.

A rule of thumb: if you expect to change something more than once a month, the editable site is the better fit.

Four complete examples

These are four typical cases priced with the calculator (prices in colones, 13% VAT included in the total):

Editable with copy and logo: we write the 8 pages and design your logo ₡939,500 ₡1,061,635 ₡530,818

What do you pay every month or year?

A website doesn't end on launch day. These are the recurring costs:

A laptop with a website surrounded by a globe with a domain tag, a calendar, a security shield and a server
  • Domain: a .cr costs US$70 + VAT a year and a .com US$20 + VAT a year. It's charged in colones at the Central Bank's selling rate of the day and registered in your business's name. See how to choose a good domain.
  • Maintenance, optional:
    • Basic, ₡25,000 a month + VAT: hosting, backups and small changes.
    • Growth, ₡65,000 a month + VAT: all of the above plus 2 articles a month and a Google report.

If you'd rather host the site yourself, you don't pay for maintenance; you just need someone to keep it updated and secure. More in hosting and maintenance.

Why do website prices vary so much?

In Costa Rica you can find websites from "free" to several million colones. The difference almost always comes down to these five things:

  1. Template or your own design. A template is cheaper, but your site looks like thousands of others.
  2. Who owns it. On rented platforms such as Wix, if you stop paying the site goes offline and you can't take it with you. Compare in Wix vs. your own website.
  3. What's included. Copy, photos, logo, English version, SEO, forms and payments may be included or charged separately.
  4. What happens afterwards. Maintenance, backups and changes: some include them, others charge by the hour.
  5. Custom features. Bookings, payments, quote calculators or connections to other systems raise the price, because they're programming work.

Questions to compare quotes

Before deciding, ask each provider:

  • Does the price include VAT?
  • How many pages are included and how much is each extra page?
  • Who writes the text and who gets the photos?
  • Will the domain and the site be in my business's name?
  • Can I change the content myself?
  • What does it cost every month or year after launch?

To understand the whole process, read what to expect from a web agency.

How to know what it will cost you

  1. Count your pages: home, services (one per important service), about, contact. That tells you whether the 5- or 8-page plan fits.
  2. Decide who will make changes: you (editable) or us (brochure).
  3. Check what you already have: logo, text, photos.
  4. Decide the languages: if you sell to tourists or abroad, add the English version.
  5. Open the calculator and tick your options: the total appears instantly.

Frequently asked questions

Does the website price include VAT?

No. The calculator's prices are before VAT. The 13% VAT is added to the total and shows on your quote and your electronic invoice.

Does the price include the domain and hosting?

The domain doesn't: it's paid separately every year (US$70 + VAT for a .cr, US$20 + VAT for a .com) and stays in your business's name. Hosting comes with the maintenance plans, from ₡25,000 a month + VAT, or you can host the site yourself.

Can I pay for the website in installments?

Yes. You pay a 50% deposit to start and the balance before launch. You can pay by card, PayPal, SINPE Móvil or bank transfer.

What if I change my mind after paying the deposit?

You can cancel within 8 business days of paying and we refund 100% of the deposit. The details are in our deposit and cancellation policy.

What's the difference between a website and an online store?

A website presents your business and receives inquiries; an online store also has a catalog, a cart and online payment. At WEB.CR a store costs from ₡934,450 + VAT.
