How to get Google reviews for your business in Costa Rica

In short: Google reviews are the first thing a customer sees when they look up your business, and they help you show up on the map. To get them, ask right after a good service, with the link or QR code from your Google Business Profile: the customer just taps and writes. Reply to all of them, negative ones included. And don't buy reviews or give discounts in exchange: Google forbids it and can remove them.

In Costa Rica, before calling a business, many people look it up on Google and check the stars. A business with 40 recent reviews wins the customer's trust over one with 3 reviews from two years ago, even if the service is just as good.

Why do Google reviews matter?

Reviews do two jobs: they convince the customer and they help you show up on Google.

  • Trust. Customers read what others say before writing to you. Reviews with details ("they delivered my order in Heredia the next day") carry more weight than a plain "excellent".
  • Visibility on the map. Google says the number of reviews and their rating influence local results, along with relevance and distance.
  • Free feedback. Reviews tell you what your customers value and what to improve.

How do you ask customers for reviews?

The easiest way is to send the direct link to review your business. In your Google Business Profile, the "Ask for reviews" option gives you a link and a QR code.

  1. Ask at the right moment: when you deliver the work, when the customer thanks you or when they confirm everything arrived fine.
  2. Send the link on WhatsApp with a short message, for example: "Thank you for your purchase. If you liked the service, a Google review would help us a lot: [link]".
  3. Put the QR code on the counter, the invoice, your business card or the packaging.
  4. Add the link to your website, your email signature and the thank-you message after a purchase.
  5. Ask all your customers, not only the ones you think are happy.

What does Google forbid?

Google removes fake reviews and can penalize a business that gets reviews improperly. Avoid:

  • Buying reviews or asking people who aren't customers.
  • Giving discounts, gifts or prizes in exchange for a review.
  • Writing your own reviews, or asking your employees or relatives.
  • Asking only happy customers, screening out the ones who might complain.

How should you reply to reviews?

Reply to all of them, as your business and in a friendly tone. A reply shows future customers that someone is paying attention.

  • Positive: say thanks and mention something specific ("Thank you, María, so glad you liked the birthday cake").
  • Negative: reply calmly, without arguing in public. Apologize for the bad experience, explain briefly and offer to sort it out by WhatsApp or phone.
  • Fake or offensive: you can't delete them, but you can report them from your Business Profile if they break Google's policies.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete a negative review?

No. Only the person who wrote it can delete it. You can reply and, if it's fake or breaks Google's policies, report it for Google to review.

How many reviews does my business need?

There's no magic number. What matters is having more, and more recent, reviews than the competition in your area, and that they keep coming every month.

Do reviews help you rank higher on Google?

Yes, on the map and in local results. Google says the number and rating of reviews are part of how it orders those results. See how to get your business on Google.
